Posted: 24 Jan 2009 Hi all, I'm off to Gran Canaria at the beginning of June and have permission from the other half to spend half a day herping(maybe longer if I can twist her arm more!). Despite a bit of Googling, I cannot find a definitive list of herps which can be found. Can anyone help with this? Thanks, Mark Hampshire Amphibian and Reptile Group. |

Posted: 24 Jan 2009 Hi Mark It wont take you long to find the reptiles on the island. List - reptiles
*often found around the Canary Islands. If you manage to get aboard any boats (for whale watching etc) you can spot these turtles from these boats -loggerheads have been reared on Fuerteventura http://www.iberianature.com/spainblog/category/reptiles-amph ibians/ **apparently this species is also seen around the Canaries and it has occassionally bred on the islands Source: Arnold (2002) Field guide Reptiles and Amphibians in Britain & Europe Collins London Other sources http://www.hull.ac.uk/geogmods/html/reptiles.html http://www.fuerteventura.com/fauna/reptiles.shtml http://www.unep-wcmc.org/sites/wh/pdf/Garajonay.pdf

Posted: 22 Jun 2009 Thanks for the replies and it was a good holiday. I did manage to get some herping time whilst we were out there. Whilst taking a walk around around the resort we found a dead-end road which over looked a golf-course and the Maspalomas Dunes. Whilst looking over the fence which was protection from the cliff edge, I noticed a small lizard scarper into cover - no positive id but never mind. Then took a little break nearby and within a minute or so, a Gran Canaria Giant Lizard appeared from beyond the field of view. A certainly impressive species - big and bulky and it was in fact the biggest one of the whole week. Spotted a nice looking bit of habitat north of the hotel, beyond a duel carriageway so with a couple of hours to spare in the early evening I decided to take a visit. Managed to find a few lizards - a few more giant lizards then had a fleeting glimpse of a Gran Canaria skink, the distinctive blue tail making a positive id. The following day we went on a coach trip and we had a 20minute stop for shops in Aurinaga(sp?), a place where the Atlantic Lizard was introduced. I hate shopping so I scooted down to a bit of wasteland I noticed a few blocks down from where the coach was parked. I spotted 3 lizards which were the right size for Atlantic Lizards but they were a little too quick for positive id so can't say for sure. Also had a trip to Palmitos Park which is zoo and well worth a trip if you are on Holiday in Gran Canaria. Quite a few Lizards in the grounds, mostly Giant Lizards but one or 2 skinks. I will post some pics when I get them off the other halfs camera. Mark Hampshire Amphibian and Reptile Group. |
